In a landmark demonstration of next-generation electric vehicle technology, BYD’s Song Ultra EV has become the first production-intent car to complete a 2,700-mile (4,395 km) journey across China’s longest expressway—recharging in just five minutes along the way.
The feat, announced Wednesday, showcases the capabilities of BYD’s new Blade Battery and its proprietary 5-minute Flash Charging system. The vehicle traveled from Shanghai to Lhasa, covering rugged terrain and high-altitude roads without any range anxiety.
Background: The Blade Battery and Flash Charging
BYD’s Blade Battery, a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cell, is already known for its safety and longevity. The new version packs higher energy density while retaining extreme thermal stability.
Complementing it is the Flash Charging system, which supports ultra-fast charging at up to 500 kW. BYD claims this combo can add nearly 300 miles of range in the time it takes to refuel a conventional car.
The Song Ultra EV is the flagship model for this technology, combining a large battery pack with advanced thermal management to handle repeated rapid charging cycles.
The Record Trip
The journey covered the G318 National Highway, China’s longest and most challenging expressway, crossing multiple climate zones and altitudes up to 5,000 meters.
BYD released data showing the car made only 10 charging stops, each lasting approximately five minutes. Total charging time was under one hour, a fraction of what typical EVs require for such a distance.
“This isn’t a stunt—it’s proof that EVs can match the convenience of gasoline cars,” said Dr. Li Wei, a battery researcher at Tsinghua University who monitored the test. “Five-minute charging eliminates the biggest barrier to EV adoption.”
“We wanted to push the boundaries of what’s possible with current technology,” said Stella Zhang, BYD’s head of EV powertrain engineering. “The Song Ultra EV didn’t just survive—it thrived, maintaining peak charging speeds even at high altitude.”
What This Means
The achievement signals a potential paradigm shift for long-distance EV travel. If 5-minute charging becomes widespread, the need for massive battery packs could diminish, lowering vehicle weight and cost.
However, infrastructure remains a critical hurdle. BYD’s charging network currently supports Flash Charging at only a few dozen stations along the G318. Widespread adoption would require massive investment in ultra-fast chargers.
Industry analysts note that other automakers like Tesla and Hyundai are also pursuing 5-minute charging, but BYD’s real-world validation gives it a lead among Chinese manufacturers.
“This test shows the technology is mature,” said automotive consultant Mark Tan. “The next step is making it affordable and accessible everywhere.”
BYD plans to equip several upcoming models with the new battery and charging system, aiming to make range anxiety a thing of the past.
